How To Play
On the first screen you get to choose which type of darts player you would like to play by clicking one of the buttons shown. Clicking "Novice" means the computer player will be OK but not brilliant, "Semi-Pro" means the player will be quite good and "Pro" is a pretty good player. I have tried to make the computer players as near human as possible, so like us a Pro computer player may hit the treble twenty quite a lot and the Novice player may not always be on target.
The next frame shows the dartboard and a moving blue cross when your mouse pointer is over the board. This is the aimer for where the darts will land. Wait until the cross is over the area where you want the dart to land and click the left mouse button to release the dart. Remember there is a slight delay as in the real game before the dart hits the board so release the dart a little before the aimer gets to the point you want the dart to land. With practice you should get the hang of when to release your dart. If the aimer cross is difficult to see on your screen you can select Large Cross in the top menu under Options. If the aimer cross is moving too fast or too slow on your system then you can slow it down or speed it up by setting Cross Ctrl (Cross Control) in the bottom left of the screen. Clicking the right arrow increases the cross control setting making the cross move slower. Clicking the left arrow reduces cross control making the cross move more quickly. The Cross Ctrl setting is kept for all future games. Also you can play this game full screen by choosing Full Screen in the same Options menu. If Full Screen is selected then the top menu will disappear and a red close button will appear on the right of your screen. Click the red close button to return to the small windowed mode with the menu bar.
The game scores start at 501 and the idea is that each player has three darts each go, which you have to throw at the board and score points for each dart depending where the dart lands. Your score is reduced by the total score for each go and the first player to reach 0 is the winner but there is a twist in the game of darts. To get to 0 you must finish on a double. This means that your last dart which reduces the score to 0 must land in one of the outer segments of the board or directly in the centre.
The dartboard is divided up into segments. You will notice the numbers around the edge and these correspond to the segment they are next to. Each segment is divided further into four other parts which have different values. If your dart lands in the top band, coloured either red or green, your score for that dart is double the amount of the number shown next to it i.e. in the 20 segment, the top red band scores 40. If your dart lands in the smaller middle band, your score for that dart is trebled i.e. in the 20 segment you would score 60. In the rest of the segment coloured black or beige your dart would score a single amount i.e. in the 20 segment you would score 20. In the centre of the board is the bullseye which scores 25 for the outer green segment and 50 for the inner red. You can finish on a red bull as this is counted as a double.
The highest score on the board is the middle segment of the 20 section, this being treble 20 i.e. 60. This is why most darts players aim for this segment.
When your score gets close to 0, you will have to work out which "double" segment you will have to hit to finish i.e. if you need 40 to finish, your dart must land in the double 20, top segment. If you go over your score and get more than you need or don't finish on a double, you will "BUST". This will send your score back to what it was before you started your throw. This will also happen if you finish needing only 1 as you will not be able to finish on a "double". There are a number of ways of finishing the game of darts depending on where you are in the World, but this is the generally recognised standard way of playing.
